When I start working with a client, one thing I want them to understand is that I’m not just there to build a home; I want to build a relationship. I want to be the person that client relies on for all building needs. When M.K. Smith Builders finishes a job, the clients will have complete confidence that every aspect of the project was done in the best way.  My commitment to excellence is supported by the four factors of Ethics, Education, Experience and Exposure.

Ethics. I grew up in a small town where people looked out for each other.  I’ve used that foundation to build a company which is client -focused rather than project-focused.  It is important to me that my clients know I am doing everything in their best interest. I realize that clients’ time is valuable, so I am always organized, concise, direct, and honest, whether it’s good or bad news. I think clients deserve to have the most complete and up-to date information so they can make the best decisions.

Education. My whole life, I have taken things apart to understand how they work and put them back together. So choosing to study engineering at Clemson was a natural choice.  I earned my Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1995, with an emphasis on Structural Design and Construction Management.  The intensive study of structural engineering has provided me with a scientific understanding of building materials, stresses and forces and serves as a background for problem analysis, information gathering, and problem resolution.  While at Clemson, I also pursued an English minor which has afforded me an appreciation of language, as well as superior written and spoken communication skills.

Experience.  My journey to becoming a home builder has been interesting.  I have had the good fortune to work on some of the highest-profile jobs in the state.  Fresh out of college, I was a field engineer working on the South End Zone and Upper Deck addition to Williams- Brice Stadium.  My first historical renovation was the South Carolina State House, where my responsibilities as area superintendent included concrete placement, foundations and seismic protection, supervision of sitework and landscaping, roofing, OSHA compliance, and finishes including pressed metal ceilings, marble, granite, casework and millwork, copper dome replacement and painting.  As a project manager in the commercial world, I built high-rise luxury condominiums (Ocean Club in N.M.B), a large office complex (Suggs & KellyLawCenter) and oversaw the historical renovation of McCants(Logan) Elementary School.  Ironically, my last commercial project was a residence, the South Carolina Governor’s Mansion.  Renovating an historic residence that had so many anecdotes attached to it made me realize that there is an intimacy to residential building that is very rare in commercial construction.  I wanted the chance to hear more stories that connected people with the center of their lives, their home.  So I made the switch, moving to Charleston in 2000.  My recent experience has mainly been building high-end, custom waterfront homes ($750,000-$2.5 million)
